FAXPak NetShare Information
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Overview
--------
There are several commercial products available that allow
sharing of a fax board across a network. Some of them are pretty
good, but for the most part they are pretty high-priced. If
you're on a large network and can justify the cost, great. If, on
the other hand, you have a fairly small network and spending a
few thousand dollars is a bit much, give FAXPak NetShare a try.
FAXPak NetShare allows all the users on a PC network to share a
single Intel fax board (SatisFAXtion or Connection Coprocessor).
Two versions of the "fax server" program are included: a
dedicated version and a non-dedicated one. The dedicated version
takes over complete use of the fax PC whereas the non-dedicated
one runs as a TSR (background) program allowing you to continue
to use that PC for other programs.
Also included are two programs that are run by the users of the
network: FPNETFAX is used to send the faxes and FPNETLOG is used
to view the log of fax results.
FPNETFAX is a fill-in-the-blanks type program that is used to
specify the destination of the fax, the files to send, time to
send etc. This program also allows each user to maintain one (or
more) "phone books" of commonly faxed numbers. Also supported are
faxes to multiple destinations, scheduling faxes to be done when
phone rates are lowest, automatic re-trying of faxes that don't
get completed, cover page text entry, and many other handy
features.
The log program (FPNETLOG) allows one or many logs to be
maintained. For example, each user of the network can have a log
just of his own faxes. Or, you may prefer a single log for the
entire network. The log contains the usual information about when
the fax was sent, how long it took, the name of the file(s) sent,
an error messages, the number of transmission errors that
occurred, etc.
UNIQUE FEATURES
---------------
I've tried to write FAXPak NetShare in an "open" manner to allow
programmers and integrators some flexibility in using the fax
server from custom programs. For example, how many network fax
programs allow DOS BATCH files to be used to send faxes? FAXPak
NetShare does. Also, any computer language can be easily used to
send faxes through the server. This includes all of the xBase
derivatives like dBase, FoxBase, FoxPro, and Clipper. Any
programming environment that allows the creating of ASCII files
may be used!
FAXPak NetShare Information
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
All of the FAXPak NetShare programs are controlled by
initialization files (.INI) which are plain text and can be
modified with any editor. These .INI files allow many customizing
options that make use on a network a "piece of cake".
The non-dedicated server also has "external program execution"
features. This allows other programs to be "hooked" to the server
for the purpose of printing incoming faxes AND for the purpose of
TRANSLATING word processing document files into faxable files.
This means that you can use your favorite word processor to
create documents containing all of the fonts and graphics you
like then have FAXPak NetShare run a conversion program to
convert that file into a faxable file before sending it.
FAXPak NetShare comes with an "install" program that makes
getting started easy.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
---------------------
In keeping with the "small" is beautiful theory, the non-
dedicated server programs requires only 16k of memory (may be
loaded high if you have a memory manager that does that sort of
thing). The dedicated server runs in 256k of memory. It will run
on any compatible PC but running on a 286 or better is
recommended (especially if using any "external" programs).
The "user" programs run in 256k of memory as well.
FAXPak NetShare expects to find that your Intel fax board was
installed according to the Intel recommendations. Most
importantly, it should NOT be installed on a network PC without
it's own local hard disk!
AMAZING LOW PRICE
-----------------
You get all of this for only $79.00 (plus $2.50 handling). You
have a 60 day no-questions-asked money-back guarantee (except for
the handling fee!). Support is available via phone, fax, or
electronic mail on Compuserve.
TRIAL EDITION
-------------
A trial edition has been uploaded to Compuserve PCEO forum and
may be available from other bulletin boards as well. This version
is fully functional except that only the non-dedicated (TSR) fax
server program is included. If you prefer to get the trial
edition on disk, it is available for only a $ 2.50 handling fee.

FILE TRANSLATION PACKAGE
------------------------
An add-on package is available that includes the following items:
■ LaserFAX from Crandell Development Corporation
This is a file translation program that accepts as input a
file containing HP PCL codes and converts that file into a
DCX file which is the format required by the Intel fax
boards. This program can be integrated into the server so
that files are converted by the server PC automatically
before being faxed.
■ FPWINMAC
This is a macro for use with Microsoft Word for Windows that
allows the document to be faxed without leaving Word.
■ FPWPMAC
Macro for use with Word Perfect (5.1) that allows faxing
from within Word Perfect.
■ FPPrint
Prints Intel fax files to an HP laser printer (or
compatible). When integrated with FAXPak NetShare, received
faxes can be printed automatically when they arrive.
■ FPNsend
This is a "command line" oriented program (similar to FPSEND
in FAXPak) that is used to send faxes from the DOS command
prompt.
With this package FAXPak NetShare allows your users to fax from
Word for Windows, Word Perfect, the DOS command line, or by using
FPNETFAX. They can fax files that contain fancy fonts and
graphics. AND incoming faxes can be printed as they are received
to an HP laser printer (or compatible).
NOTE TO DEVELOPERS and POWER USERS
----------------------------------
If you are adept at the macro language of any product, you will
find that writing macros to interface with FAXPak NetShare will
be easy. The interface point is (what I call) a FAX CONTROL FILE.
This is a plain text file that is placed in a specific network
directory. It contains commands that the fax server processes.
Here's an example fax control file:

PHONE=1-303-440-7683
FROM=Jeff Hofstetter
DATE=08-15-1991
TIME=23:30
SFILE=F:\FAXPAK\ADVERT.PCL
That's all there is to it! AND as a bonus, the log files
maintained by FAXPak NetShare are all PLAIN TEXT files that are
formatted just about like a fax control file so you can easily
read them for your own use.
DOCUMENTATION
-------------
The FAXPak NetShare manual is provided on disk only. The file is
formatted for printing by any printer or may be "viewed" using
any file viewer.
The "user" programs FPNETFAX and FPNETLOG have on-line help
available by pressing function key F1.
LICENSE
-------
The FAXPak NetShare fax server program (either FPNSHARE.EXE or
FPNSTSR.EXE) is licensed for use on a single PC with a compatible
fax board. The "user" programs (FPNETFAX and FPNETLOG) may be
used by any number of networked PCs to communicate with the fax
server program.
WHAT ABOUT WINDOWS?
-------------------
None of the programs are Microsoft Windows programs, but may be
run in a DOS session if desired. Running the TSR server with
Windows is done "at your own risk"! It is not specifically non-
Windows compatible, but running any TSR with Windows can be an
exciting and fun-filled adventure.
